South Dade Busway Feeder Study

  • The†South Miami-Dade Busway began operating in 1997 and is Miami-Dade Transit's state-of-the-art alternative to daily traffic congestion along South Dixie Highway. The first of its kind in Florida, the Phase I, 8.2-mile roadway was built by the Florida Department of Transportation, and is now the fastest way from Cutler Ridge and Naranja to Metrorail

    Express buses on the exclusive lanes can move passengers between†the Dadeland South Metrorail Station and SW 264th Street in†under 40†minutes, with buses entering the exclusive lanes at major intersections. Local and limited-stop service is offered between Florida City and the Dadeland South Metrorail Station.

    Phase II of the Busway extends to SW 344th Street in Florida City. The first segment of Phase II opened April 24, 2005 and extends the Busway five more miles to SW 264th Street. Park-and-ride lots†are located along the Busway at SW 152nd, SW 168th, SW 200th, and SW 244th Streets. The Southland Mall park-and-ride was recently closed by the property owner.

    As the Busway has attracted more ridership, transit riders and potential Busway riders in the community have expressed concerns that the lack of adequate park-and-ride capacity has become a deterrent to their use of the Busway. One way to meet their needs would be to improve or establish new feeder services to bring people from their communities to the Busway. This study has been requested to address their needs.

    The purpose of the study is to evaluate and recommend improved and new transit feeders as well as new park-ride lots for the purposes of:
    • their potential to reduce single occupant automobile trips;
    • their potential to reduce parking demand at the Busway stations;
    • attracting new riders to the Busway

    The South Dade Busway Transit Feeder Study can make use of several sources of recent transit data and analysis, but will also require the collection of new data for which Miami-Dade Transitís market research contractors will be used.
