Mahmoud Arafat is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Florida International University, Miami, FL.

He received his M.S. degree in Transportation Engineering from UAA, University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska, United States in 2018 with GPA 4.00 out of 4.00. His Master's thesis research was on pavement materials and his thesis titled "Survey and Economic Analysis of Pavement Impacts from Studded Tire Use in Alaska" was published in the Transportation Research Board Transport Research International Documentation.

Mahmoud primary focus is on Intelligent transportation systems and transportation safety. During his Ph.D. program, his research has focused on developing techniques to utilize the safety and mobility benefits through the implementation of Connected and Automated Vehicles CAV. He is working under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Hadi (LCTR Director).

Mahmoud won the 2020 Lifesavers Traffic Safety Scholars (TSS), National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

In 2019, he won the the first place in the Florida Automated Vehicle Summit (FAV 2019) Student's Poster Competition.

Mahmoud is the current Secretary of FIUITE student chapter, 2019-2020, and he has been serving as a social coordinator for the organization since 2018.
